My family has been producing forage here in the south-east corner of County Down for four generations. Our farm is situated in a sheltered valley and the mountains all around tend to deflect the rain making a very good microclimate for producing hay and haylage.
In previous generations, it was predominately hay that was produced and then a percentage of ground set aside for silage as methods and market demands changed, I aim for 80% haylage and 20% hay production nowadays.
